Friluftsliv: A Life Lived Outdoors

This is Part 1 of my Nordic Wellness Series: Friluftsliv — A Life Lived Outdoors. A gentle invitation to reconnect with nature, presence, and the quiet belonging that lives just outside your door.

A Nordic Ritual for Belonging

There’s a Norwegian word that has shaped my entire life, even long before I understood what it meant: friluftsliv — the simple, soulful act of living close to nature.

I grew up with it woven into the rhythm of every day. Not as a wellness trend, not as a practice to “fit in,” but as the quiet backdrop of childhood.

I remember stepping outside and immediately being met by the familiar sounds of the mountains breathing, the sea shifting, and the neighbor’s dogs trotting over to greet me as if I were part of their pack.

Nature wasn’t a place we visited. It was where we belonged.

Some days it meant walking along the beach with cold wind on my cheeks. Other days it meant wandering into the woods behind our house, pockets full of pinecones and stories. Even in winter — especially in winter — we went outside. The cold wasn’t something to avoid; it was something that woke us up, sharpened our senses, and reminded us we were alive.

Years later, living in Michigan, I realized how deeply that early connection shaped me. The landscapes are different here — softer, flatter, quieter — but the feeling is the same.

When I step outside and hear the crunch of leaves or see the light shifting across the small lake near my home, something in me settles. It’s as if my nervous system recognizes the pattern: Oh, this is where we breathe.

Friluftsliv isn’t about hiking gear or long expeditions. It’s not about being athletic or outdoorsy. It’s about belonging to the world outside your door.

It can be as simple as:

  • stepping outside with your morning coffee

  • opening a window and letting fresh air touch your face

  • taking a slow walk without a destination

  • sitting under a tree for five quiet minutes

  • noticing the sky change colors

It’s the practice of letting nature remind you of who you are beneath the noise.

For me, friluftsliv is still the place where I return to myself. It’s where I remember the girl who walked the beaches of Norway with two loyal dogs at her side. It’s where I feel the thread that connects my past to my present — from mountains and fjords to Michigan forests and lakes.

When we step outside, even for a moment, something in us softens. Nature reminds us of who we are beneath the noise. May this simple ritual bring you back to yourself, one breath of fresh air at a time.

Nature is not something you escape to.

It’s something you return to.
