What Hygge Really Means,
Understanding Hygge Through the Blue Hour
What exactly is hygge?
Hygge is often described as coziness, but to me, it’s something deeper — a feeling of being held by the moment. It’s more of a mood than a definition, a soft glow that settles over you when you slow down enough to notice the simple things.
It’s the warm light of a lamp at dusk, the comfort of a blanket on a rainy afternoon, or the quiet joy of sharing coffee with someone you love.
Hygge isn’t about creating perfection; it’s about creating ease — gentle spaces inside our homes and inside ourselves where we feel safe, grounded, and connected in the middle of everyday life.
The Blue Hour
Growing up in Norway, I learned hygge long before I ever heard the word. We have something called the blue hour — that magical time between daylight and darkness when the world seems to pause. It lasts for about an hour, a slow and gentle transition where the sky deepens into soft blues and purples and everything becomes quiet, almost sacred.
As a child, I loved sitting with my family during this time, simply being present, watching the colors shift, and letting the day settle around us.
As an adult, I’ve realized that hygge is really a way of recreating that feeling. In Scandinavia, we soften our evenings intentionally — switching off harsh overhead lights and using warm lamps or candlelight instead. I love wrapping myself in a soft blanket, sipping herbal tea, and settling in with a journal or a gentle stretch.
These small rituals calm my senses and prepare my body for rest, just like the blue hour always did.
But hygge isn’t only about solitude.
Some of my favorite moments are shared ones: talking with a friend over coffee, reading quietly together by a window, or enjoying the warmth of a fire.
Hygge lives in laughter echoing through a kitchen, in quiet companionship, and in the comfort of knowing you belong. It’s about cherishing everyday connections and creating space for warmth, peace, and presence.
How to slow down.
For me, hygge is a gentle practice — a way of turning ordinary moments into something meaningful. It’s how I carry the blue hour with me, even far from home.
That slow softening of the day, the quiet shift in light, the feeling that you can finally breathe… hygge brings that same calm into the spaces we create for ourselves.
When we choose hygge, we choose to pause. To notice. To let the day settle instead of rushing to the next thing. And in those small pauses — the warm cup in our hands, the soft blanket, the quiet companionship — we find a sense of belonging that feels both grounding and deeply human.
I hope you find your own version of the blue hour, wherever you are. A moment to soften, to slow down, and to come home to yourself.
